Black Rod

Also known as The Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod. This position is an officer of the Royal Household, and is responsible for accommodation, security and services in the House of Lords.

Black Rod is best known for the role he plays in State Opening of Parliament, when he is sent to the House of Commons to summon MPs to the House of Lords to hear the Queen's Speech. The door at the entrance of the Commons Chamber is traditionally slammed in his face, which represents the Commons' independence from the Monarch. He then knocks on the door three times with his staff , and in reply to the challenge "Who is there?" answers "Black Rod". On gaining entry, he goes to the Table, where he announces the Queen's summons to attend.

Black Rod's role is similar to that of the Serjeant at Arms in the House of Commons.
