Chief Whip

This role is responsible for maintaining party discipline and making sure that members vote in line with their party in important debates.

The Government Chief Whip has the official title of 'Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury', and is a member of the Cabinet. Their official residence is Number 12 Downing Street.

Government and Opposition Chief Whips do not take part in parliamentary debates, but may arrange a sensible timetable for discussion of government bills, opposition days, private members' bills and any other business.
