Naming of a Member

A term used to describe the disciplining of an MP for breaking the rules of the House of Commons. When speaking in debates, MPs may not refer to another member directly by name, and must use the name of their constituencies or by their official position.

However, if an MP persistently obstructs the House in its duties, or disregards the authority of the Chair, then the Speaker may say "I name the Honourable Member for [Constituency] Mr (Ms) [Name], for disregarding the authority of the Chair."

This naming will result in a 5 day suspension. The second offence in the same parliamentary sitting carries 20 days suspension and a third offence will carry a suspension period decided by the House. If an MP refuses to withdraw, then they will be suspended for the rest of the session.
