Oath of Allegiance

Also known as Affirmation.

An Oath of Allegiance must be sworn by every MP taking their seat in the House of Commons after election, and by every member of the House of Lords on introduction and at the beginning of every new Parliament.

Members must hold a copy of the New Testament, Old Testament or Koran, and say:

"I [name], swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God."

Members who object to oath swearing may make a Solemn Affirmation instead, saying:

"I [name], do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors according to law".
