Official Opposition

Also known as Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition.

The party who received the second highest number of seats in the House of Commons (therefore the largest opposition party). The leader of this party is called the Leader of the Opposition, and is entitled to sit on the front bench, close to the despatch box. In the House of Lords, the Leader of the Opposition heads the main party opposing the Government.
