Pairing

An informal arrangement, where two MPs of opposing parties agree not to vote in a particular division, giving them the opportunity to miss occasional votes in the House. MPs are generally only allowed to pair on votes that are not three-line whips.

Pairings can last for years, and can produce some strange partnerships - for example, before the 1997 election, Mo Mowlam was an established pair with Michael Portillo.
