Usual Channels

This is a term used to describe the working relationship between the Whips of the government and the opposition parties. There needs to be a degree of co-operation between the parties to arrange a workable timetable for the discussion of government bills, opposition days, and any other business. The 'usual channels' refers to the negotiations and arrangements between the chief whips of the main parties that are agreed behind the scenes and ensure the smooth running of business.
