Role:
This new Department, created in June 2009, brings together functions from a number of former departments: Skills, further and higher education from the Department for Education & Skills, science and innovation responsibilities from the Department of Trade & Industry, and business from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
The aim of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) is to build a dynamic, knowledge based economy, and in doing so will draw together the nation's strengths in colleges, research, science and universities.
Priorities include:
- Building a capable and well-respected Department
- Delivering Real Help for businesses and individuals through the downturn
- Developing and implementing plans for new industrial opportunities and new jobs
- Ensuring other government departments' policies reflect BIS expertise and goals
- Ensuring the success of key sectors
- Fostering a world-class science and knowledge base
- Improving regulatory frameworks whilst minimising burdens
- Increasing innovation and enterprise in our society and economy
- Maintaining open markets in the UK, EU and internationally
- Progressing towards a world-class skills base
- Sustaining excellent, responsive higher education
