Role:

This new Department, created in June 2009, brings together functions from a number of former departments: Skills, further and higher education from the Department for Education & Skills, science and innovation responsibilities from the Department of Trade & Industry, and business from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

The aim of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) is to build a dynamic, knowledge based economy, and in doing so will draw together the nation's strengths in colleges, research, science and universities.

Priorities include:

  • Building a capable and well-respected Department
  • Delivering Real Help for businesses and individuals through the downturn
  • Developing and implementing plans for new industrial opportunities and new jobs
  • Ensuring other government departments' policies reflect BIS expertise and goals
  • Ensuring the success of key sectors
  • Fostering a world-class science and knowledge base
  • Improving regulatory frameworks whilst minimising burdens
  • Increasing innovation and enterprise in our society and economy
  • Maintaining open markets in the UK, EU and internationally
  • Progressing towards a world-class skills base
  • Sustaining excellent, responsive higher education
